THE FLOATING STRIPE OF EAST

A three-week set of events

The floating stripe of east is inspired by the GAhjo multi-arts event, which was organized by Taidekeskus Ahjo's support association in the early 2000s. The event provides a platform for surprising encounters between people and different art forms. The program of the events has been curated by North Karelian dancer-choreographers, dance pedagogues Katariina Vähäkallio and Mari Kortelainen.

The floating stripe of east consist of art exhibitions, installation, workshops, performative programs and panel discussion Let's talk about art. The program includes for example a replay of a dance performance Tauluja ja kehollisia luentoja. The work has been choreographed and directed by Katariina Vähäkallio, a dancer-choreographer and dance pedagogue who has been influential in the field of Finnish contemporary dance since the 1980s and who in 2023 received the Recognition of Life's Work award for the first time by Teme, Trade Union for Theatre and Media Finland.

The event includes two openings:

Wed 29 May 2024 at 18 - 20 Sirkka-Liisa Kortelainen's (1921-2016) Post Mortem exhibition opening

"Sirkka-Liisa Kortelainen stated that almost all of her paintings originate from some natural phenomenon. Kortelainen's subtle and studied concretism all starts from reality. The artist's recurring themes have been the depiction of light and space; the illusion of three-dimensional space and the kinetic movement of colors" (Joensuu Art Museum publications 1/2001)

Wed 5 June 2024 at 18 – 20 opening of sculptor Minna Kangasmaa, visual and media artist Tuomo Kangasmaa and composer-media artist Makiko Nishikaze's installation.

"The installation is not only a solid work of art - it is also an experimental laboratory, collaboration and dialogue. Installation of participation, video, photographs, objects and physical participation. After the Floating stipe of east event, the installation is going to be in the Künstlerhaus Ziegelhütte in Germany”.
