ASH AND RUST
KALLE PITKÄNEN
19.6 - 7.7.2024, HEHKU-SPACE

Ashes and rust is a story about the new era of the post-apocalyptic world, its slow healing and renewal. Nature wakes up and gets stronger, but a little differently than before. The water is rusty iron and the sky is ash.

I am a visual artist who graduated in 2022 from the Art Academy of Turku Academy of Arts, whose main methods of working are tempera and oil painting, as well as bronze on the sculpting side. I am interested in exploring the blurring border between painting and sculpture by using different materials in my paintings, and the name of the exhibition partly refers to this. With the help of these materials, I aim to bring to the works, in addition to visuals, symbolism and storytelling that support the subject. For example, ashes can mean destruction or the end of something, but also the beginning of something new. I draw inspiration from nature and the beliefs connected to it, the dream images of the subconscious and the smallness of humanity in relation to the universe and eternity.
