HANNA-KAISA VAINIO - SYRJÄNIITTY
Hanna Kaisa Vainio's Syrjäniitty exhibition tells about huts, houses, plots, forests, saunas, log piles, birdhouses, yard trees and standing ears - things that form the living environment in a remote region and with which people live and intertwine.
The underlying idea behind Vainio's works is also the concept of the Spirit of Place (genius loci), which refers to the special atmosphere, atmosphere and features of a particular place that make it unique. The spirit of place can also mean a feeling that has arisen through time spent in a particular place and experiences. Vainio is generally interested in how people find, end up, adapt and take root in different places to live and live.
The mental landscape of the exhibition works is particularly located in Kainuu, where Vainio has worked in small villages for ten years. She was attracted there by the old forest and the artist residency in Hyrynsalmi in Paljakanvaara. Over the years, Vainio has become acquainted with different corners of the area, partly by living and working there. The place has become an important place that Vainio misses for its natural and peaceful way of life.
The Syrjäniitty exhibition features Vainio's woodcut graphics and ceramic sculptures. The ceramic works are made from different types of clay, partly also from local wild clay from Kainuu that he has dug himself. In the woodcuts, the image is carved onto a wooden board using chisels and the image is printed onto paper partly by rubbing it by hand and partly by using a press.
