JASMIN LIER - GHOST STORY 10.9.-28.9.2025
The photography exhibition Ghost Story by visual artist Jasmin Lier explores the experiences of a young person living with an intellectual disability. The long-term project, launched in 2022, gives voice to the challenges, emotions, and perspectives of adolescence shaped by an invisible disability.
At the core of the exhibition are portraits in which the young subject is wrapped in a light fabric. The fabric protects their privacy and separates them from the environment, while simultaneously creating a ghost-like figure. This artistic choice highlights the invisibility of the disability and draws attention to the stigma and preconceptions that often surround it.
“Through this project I also face my own feelings about what it means to follow the life of a young person with an intellectual disability and its challenges,” Lier explains. “The project is an ongoing dialogue, continuing as long as the young person wishes. Together, we are telling a real-life ghost story.”
Originally presented as Lier’s thesis in 2023, Ghost Story has since been shown in several group and solo exhibitions. The artist aims to turn the project into a touring exhibition to raise broader awareness that not all disabilities are visible.
The project and exhibition are supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
