Effendy, Hanikka, Nisonen & work group: Poimuja (Folds)

Effendy, Hanikka, Nisonen & work group premiere ITAK's sub-production Poimuja at the festival. The show will take place in the exhibition space of Taidekeskus Ahjo and will have its premiere on Saturday 26.11. at 19:00. Poimuja is a sprawling, but minimalist contemporary dance piece that invites its viewers into the folds of time to listen to the rhythms of yesterday, today and the future.

The work “Joensuulaisäidin kirjeitä sadan vuoden takaa” published by the Joensuu society serves as background material for the work. With these letters as their starting point, the multi-disciplinary working group made up of women artists born in the 1960s-1990s investigates and questions the components of femininity, wraps itself in a ten-meter-long fabric, visually strong movement and sound formations, and the question of the experiences of living as a woman.

The work captures the rhythm of humanity and the collective memory that binds current generations to all previous generations. At the same time, the work takes a stand on artistry from a female perspective, also in the theme of the festival, i.e. how women artists have been seen and experienced in the pages of history, and how women have been able to work in the fields of art.

As in the other performances of the Lonely in the Rain festival, the themes and the world of the performance will be opened up under the leadership of an expert in the discussion event organized after the Folds piece. In addition to the artists of the piece and ITAK's artistic director, Elina Hytönen-Ng, docent of ethnomusicology, who specializes in the study of musical experiences, will open up the Poimuja performance. In recent years, Hytönen-Ng has studied the manifestations of the Karelian song of lament in today's Finland.
